Intermittent fasting, perfect for weight loss, Type 2 diabetes and more!

What is Intermittent Fasting (IF)? To understand why, researchers said, one must look to how the body essentially flips a “metabolic switch” during fasting. This means the body moves from burning glucose, or sugar, for energy to fatty acids and their byproduct, ketones.

During fasting, the body converts fat into fatty acids, which can be absorbed by the blood.
Stephen Anton, a researcher at the University of Florida College of Medicine in Gainesville, calls this process "flipping the metabolic switch."

There are two main types of intermittent fasting. One type, known as “time restricted feeding”, requires eating only during a few hours of the day – say between 10am and 6pm. This approach gives the body a long break from food each night, and also reinforces beneficial circadian rhythms.

I bought the book The Obesity Code: unlocking the secrets of weight loss  written by Dr. Jason Fung, it really openend my eyes!

The other type of intermittent fasting – made popular by the 5:2 diet – is known as “periodic fasting”. This approach involves alternating between long periods of unrestricted eating and short periods of eating very little (five days of eating normally, two days of eating restricted calories).

While dieting and exercise are often the first port of call for people who want to lose weight, study author Dr. Urszula Iwaniec, of Oregon State University, and colleagues note that such strategies often fail to have prolonged success. Leptin is a hormone secreted by adipose cells, or fat cells, that plays a role in regulating energy balance by curbing hunger. Often referred to as the "satiety hormone," leptin works by sending signals to the brain that tell us when to stop eating.

Children of obese parents are most at risk of becoming obese.

The study is based on data from a population-based cohort of 2,269 children aged between eight and eleven years old.
These findings are important because they confirm that in children genes play a very important role in determining body weight. Researchers used a new method called Genome-wide Complex Trait Analysis (GCTA), to investigate the molecular genetic heritability of body weight in children. At present only a few genetic variants have been discovered, and these explain a very small amount of individual differences in body weight (~2%). These findings suggest there are hundreds of other genetic variants influencing body weight that are yet to be discovered.

Actress Gwyneth Paltrow has come under attack from a health professional regarding marketing an extreme cleanse program (detox) on her website.The celebrity informed followers about her diet plan 'Cleanse'. The detox involves, vitamins, two protein shakes and one low-calorie dinner each day. Dietitian Catherine Collins (chief) from St. George's Hospital in London is not impressed with Gwyneth Paltrow diet plan. Catherine Collins informs Daily Mail On Sunday, "She is not a dietitian. Hunger is one of the biggest issues when you are on a diet. It's the most typical problem that people will encounter. But there are some foods that you need to avoid when you are dieting. Here is an example of 4 foods that can increase your hunger levels.
Sugary Cereals: Are bad for your diet and increase your hunger levels.  Eating ceareals you become very hungry after eating them, why? You are going to get a huge blood sugar spike after eating this food. This is then followed by a sharp decline as insulin is released and comes and sucks all that glucose from the blood, giving you a decline of blood sugar, what makes you hungry again! For breakfast you can better eat oatmeal without sugar or bran cereal, it helps to control your hunger levels.

Eat oatmeal instead of granola: oatmeal is very high in fiber and sugar free, which cannot be said for most granola cereals. The first great swap to make is to exchange out your usual bowl of granola in the morning for some oatmeal instead. By choosing oatmeal instead, you can easily save yourself 200-300 calories in the process.

Eat spaghetti squash instead of pasta : Pasta is a very high calorie food is and is very easy to overeat on.  If you want to maintain that reduced calorie intake for faster weight loss, then squash is the superior choice.

Studie: Resveratrol improves metabolic function in obese men

The 11 participants in a Dutch study were obese but otherwise healthy men, who served as their own control group. A participant who took a placebo supplement for 30 days would wait a month and then take a resveratrol supplement for 30 days. Another who took resveratrol first would get a placebo after a month's "wash-out" period. The 150-milligram dose given to the men was actually much smaller, pound for pound, than doses routinely given to mice in past experiments, yet yielded similar blood concentrations of the plant extract. Alzheimer's disease researcher Philippe Marambaut of the Feinstein Institute for Medical Research in Long Island, N.Y., called the findings "very promising."


The study, conducted in the Netherlands and published this week in the journal Cell Metabolism, found that men taking 150 milligrams of resveratrol daily for 30 days looked for all the world as if they were either dieting successfully or were engaged in endurance training. (That dose is about the equivalent of the resveratrol in 100 glasses of red wine, so don't pull that cork just yet.)


Marambaut, who was not involved in the current study, said the beneficial metabolic effects appeared "impressive," and added that "they will certainly motivate additional clinical trials for other conditions associated with a deregulated metabolism, such as diabetes or some age-related neurodegenerative conditions like Alzheimer's disease."
